Pelvis
Mention the characteristics of a typical female pelvis. Name the Structures passing through the brim of pelvis


Characteristics of a typical female pelvis:
General characters:
*The bones are lighter and muscular markings & ridges are less prominent
* Iliac fossa is shallow
*Lower borders of ischiopubic rami are not much everted due to weak attachments of crura clitoridis.
*Acetabular cavity is small.
*Obturator formamen is small and triangular.
*Preauricular sulcus is prominent

Pelvic inlet:
*Usually round in shape & all the diameters are longer than that of male.

Pelvic cavity:
* Shorter and more cylindrical (wide & roomy).
* Symphysis and pubic body are short.
*Puboischial index is more than 90º.
* Anterior segment of chilotic line is longer than the posterior segment.

Pelvic outlet:
*Much larger
* Subpubic angle is 80º-85º.
*Ischiopubic rami are thinner and slightly everted.
* Coccyx is more vertical

Sacrum:
  1. Greater sciatic notch is wider (about 74º).
  2. Sacroiliac joint permits rotatory movement during pregnancy.
Structure passing through the brim of pelvis:
  1. Ureter
  2. Common iliac vessels
  3. Sigmoid colon.
